Align branches instead of tangling them
Parallel cut ends make a pile easier to see, measure, and carry. Keep wire, string lights, stakes, and fencing out of the pile.
Separate limbs that need equipment
Set thick or heavy pieces apart and photograph them beside a familiar object or tape measure. A pile of twigs and a pile with trunk sections are different jobs.
Protect the access route
Move vehicles, lock pets indoors, and check that gates open fully. Avoid stacking branches where they block sidewalks, hydrants, utilities, or street visibility.
Leave hazardous cutting to qualified help
Branches that are attached, elevated, under tension, or near utilities need an appropriate tree professional. This service page covers removal of material already safe on the ground.
Quick checklist
- Photograph the material and the loading route.
- Separate plant debris from trash, soil, rock, and treated wood.
- Measure tight gates and flag stairs or slopes.
- Confirm local curb and organics rules before staging in public space.
